Places to Visit in Jacksonville
Jessie Ball DuPont Park – This Park is home to the Treaty Oak, which was named by Times Union Reporter Pat Moran in the 1930s while writing a fictitious story about how white settlers and Native Americans met under the tree to sign peace treaties. Jessie duPont and the Alfred I. duPont Foundation purchased land around the tree and donated it to the city in 1964. The area around the tree became a park and was named after Jessie duPont. This park has benches and picnic tables. The tree is more than two centuries old and its trunk is more than 25 feet in circumference and more than 70 feet tall. The park was renovated in 2011.
Catty Shack Ranch Wildlife Sanctuary – The Catty Shack Ranch Wildlife Sanctuary is a non-profit organization whose mission is to provide a safe, loving home for endangered big cats while also educating the public about the dangers the cats face in the wild and captivity. The sanctuary rescues cats from bad situations. In the sanctuary, you will go on a guided-walking tour to see tigers, lions, cougars, leopards, lynx, coatimundis, and foxes. Tours are 45 minutes. After the tour, you can wander on your own and revisit the cats. Daytime tours are every Thursday. Pictures are allowed. It is open from 1 to 4 p.m. with the last entry at 3:15 p.m. Tickets cost $10 for adults, $5 for children ages 3 to 11, and free for children 2 and under.
